The 2013 Heart of the Wolds Cycle Sportive arose from a mutual interest between Adam and Phil to put on a high quality cycling event in the area. Adam came up with 3 different loops which would cater for varying levels of cycling ability. The Challenge at 134km and up and down many of the major hills of the Wolds was clearly aimed at the experienced cyclist who was used to being several hours at a time on their bikes. The Classic at 100km went on the same route as the Challenge for much of the route, but ended with a long downhill stretch making it ideal for the cyclist who likes a challenge – few are likely to finish this in under 3.5 hours -  but maybe hasn’t got the miles in the legs at that point in the season.

Our entry level ride was the 53km Rudston Challenge. As the day turned out to be cold and with a strong westerly breeze, it’s fair to say that some on the Rudston Challenge did struggle so for future years we amended, and shortened this route to make it more beginner friendly.

However, for the other riders, by the time they returned to Driffield Showground, an ideal HQ, they were buzzing with how good the ride had been. They were even happier by the time they’d had their complimentary pie and peas lunch and bottle of Maillot Jaune beer, our bespoke Event Ale.

We had nearly 600 riders for this first event which we were delighted with and it was a great base from which to plan the following year’s event.
